A closer look at the general linear model
This module offers an introduction to the workhorse of quantitative data analysis – the general linear model. In the general linear model, a continuous outcome is modelled as a linear combination of a number of predictors, and commonly encountered techniques such as t-tests, ANOVA, and linear regression are instantiations of this model.
We’ll start by revising the principles behind simple regression, in which only a single continuous predictor is considered. We’ll then see how we can incorporate multiple predictors and interactions between them. In the final part, we’ll turn to the generalised linear model, more specifically to logistic regression, in order to model binary outcomes.
Throughout this module, key concepts are explained by means of simulations. Great emphasis is placed on understanding the literal meaning of the output of your analyses before interpreting them in subject-matter terms in order to preempt common misunderstandings. Moreover, we will continuously stress the importance of tailoring the analysis to the research questions and the study’s design rather than following flow charts.
As of 2024, this module can be followed together with module 10 Multivariate data analysis with R in a complete Expert track for this Summer School.
Target audience
Anyone interested in quantitative data analysis by means of the general linear model (i.e. ANOVA, multiple linear regression,…).
Course prerequisites
A basic working knowledge of R.
A computer with R installed (at least version 4.2) and ideally RStudio as well.
Course materials
A script (including exercises) and data sets will be provided.
